Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. The aim is to remove the affected tissue, disinfect the root-canal system and seal the tooth so it can continue functioning when restoration is appropriate.

Symptoms that may indicate a problem

Persistent toothache, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain on biting, swelling, a gum pimple or tooth darkening may suggest pulp damage. These signs are not diagnostic by themselves. Cracks, gum disease, sinus problems and jaw-muscle pain can produce similar symptoms, so an examination and X-ray are important.

What happens during treatment?

After diagnosis and anaesthesia, the dentist isolates the tooth, creates access to the canals, cleans and shapes them, then fills and seals the space. Some teeth can be treated in one appointment; others need more than one visit depending on infection, anatomy and symptoms.

Will the tooth need a crown?

Back teeth and structurally weakened teeth often benefit from cuspal coverage such as a crown or onlay because they can be more vulnerable to fracture. The final restoration depends on how much healthy tooth remains, the bite and the tooth’s position.

What should you expect afterward?

Temporary tenderness may occur for a few days. Follow medication instructions and avoid heavy biting on a temporary restoration. Contact the clinic for increasing swelling, severe pain that does not settle, fever, a lost temporary filling or an altered bite.

Root canal or extraction?

Saving a restorable natural tooth can avoid a gap and the need for replacement, but not every tooth can be predictably restored. Extraction may be considered for severe cracks, inadequate support or other unfavourable factors. The dentist should explain both paths, including future restoration needs.
