Being asked to have an oral biopsy can be worrying. Once the sample has been taken, a different set of questions often follows: When will the report arrive? Who will explain it? Does the wording mean treatment is needed?
The most useful next step is a clear results appointment. Before leaving the clinic, ask how the report will be communicated and whom to contact if you have not heard by the expected time.
What is the biopsy looking for?
A biopsy takes a sample of tissue for examination. It can help investigate a suspicious area and establish a diagnosis. Being referred for a biopsy does not itself confirm cancer. If cancer is diagnosed, further tests may be needed to understand its extent and plan treatment. NHS: Mouth cancer tests and next steps
Read the report with the clinician
Rather than interpreting one unfamiliar word in isolation, ask how the findings fit the appearance of the lesion, your symptoms and any imaging. Request a plain-language explanation of the diagnosis and whether the result answers the original clinical question.
Ask whether further sampling, treatment or observation is recommended. If observation is advised, get a review date and a description of changes that should bring you back earlier. Keep a copy of the report with your other dental records.
Do not ignore a persistent change
An ulcer lasting more than three weeks, a lump, or a persistent red or white patch should be assessed. These symptoms can have causes other than cancer, but guessing from a photograph or waiting indefinitely is not a substitute for examination. Seek advice sooner for a concerning or worsening change. Frequently asked questions
Does a biopsy mean I need cancer treatment?
No. The result and clinical assessment determine what happens next.
Can the laboratory report replace a follow-up visit?
Ask the treating clinician how the result should be reviewed. You should understand both the diagnosis and the plan.
Can Dr. Pandhi assess an oral-surgery concern?
The clinic lists oral and maxillofacial surgery among Dr. Vinit Pandhi's areas of practice. Contact The Curve Dental Solutions in Andheri West to explain the concern and arrange the appropriate consultation. Read our oral biopsy guide before your appointment.
