Cone beam computed tomography, or CBCT, creates three-dimensional images of teeth, jaws and nearby structures. It can provide information that a conventional dental X-ray cannot, but it involves radiation and should be prescribed only when the expected diagnostic benefit justifies it.
Implant planning
CBCT may help assess bone dimensions, anatomy and the position of structures such as the maxillary sinus or nerve canal. It can support virtual planning and guide whether grafting or a modified approach should be considered. The scan does not replace clinical examination or guarantee an uncomplicated result.
Wisdom teeth
A panoramic X-ray is often the first image used for impacted wisdom teeth. CBCT may be considered when roots appear close to a nerve or when three-dimensional detail could change surgical planning.
Other possible uses
Selected cases involving complex root-canal anatomy, jaw lesions, trauma or impacted teeth may benefit from CBCT. The field of view should be limited to the area needed, and the scan should be interpreted by an appropriately trained professional.
What patients should mention
Tell the clinician if you may be pregnant and bring recent scans to avoid unnecessary duplication. Ask why the scan is recommended, how it will affect the decision and whether a lower-dose or two-dimensional image would answer the question.
